A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play written by William Shakespeare, first performed in circa 1596 and was likely written shortly before the creation of Romeo and Juliet. The play is set in Athens, one of the largest cities in Greece, as well as an enchanted forest that exists just outside Athenian walls. The contrast between the city and the forest will become deeply significant as we delve deeper into the play and its themes. The play focuses on a number of different characters, with many taking inspiration from Greek Mythology. In addition to Theseus, the Duke of Athens, A Midsummer Nights Dream also depicts the story of four lovers: Demetrius, Hermia, Lysander, and Helena. As the four travel into the enchanted forest, their adventures through the play will see them encountering magic, mystical royalty, and mischievous faeries.
